Tell Congress to Pass the Marketplace Fairness Act!
America’s sales tax system unfairly favors online retailers — who are not required to collect sales tax on most sales — at the disadvantage of brick-and-mortar merchants. With sales tax amounting to 10 percent, or more, in some areas, Main Street retailers are seeing increased evidence that their customers are buying online in order to avoid the tax. It’s time to level the playing field so all retailers — no matter which channel they sell in — can remain competitive. Sales tax fairness is about more than just fairness among retailers—it’s about protecting local jobs that are badly needed to support American families and keep towns and cities thriving.

The current system of sales tax collection puts brick-and-mortar merchants at a distinct disadvantage to online sellers. The current system allows Internet sellers without a physical presence in a given state or community to escape sales taxes collection, even when those taxes are owed to the state. This unfairness comes at the expense of local businesses, large and small, which are required to collect taxes and forced to charge higher prices to consumers as a result. This unlevel playing field creates winners and losers among retailers at a time when the economy is struggling and every penny counts. A national solution would allow retailers to fairly compete for business, plan for the future, grow our economy, and create jobs in my community. Now is the time to level the playing field for every retailer and pass a comprehensive bill to address sales tax fairness. As a supporter of retail in my community, I, the undersigned, urge Congress to pass the Marketplace Fairness Act and keep the economy growing. |
